I’ll note right away that the firmware of this region is practically no different from the PCT, the Russian language, of course, is present. Therefore, there is no point in waiting.

External shell changes based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow

External changes are always more noticeable than software ones, so let's start with them. Moreover, a lot of little things have been changed

New status bar- this is the first thing you notice. The system icons have become different, more similar to the standard ones from Android Marshmallow. Looking ahead, I must say that there will be many similar changes towards stock Android.

Curtain and quick settings menu got new animations, and there are more animations themselves and now they are smoother and longer.

Menu of open applications. Noticeably smoother scrolling.

Change the volume. A minimalistic menu for working with the device’s volume, the design is almost like stock Android 6.0. Changing the volume has become more convenient and faster.

Numerous minor changes. New system icons in the desktop editing menu, new animations, etc.

New Settings / Standard Applications

Despite the fact that after the first glance at the Settings and standard applications of the new Android 6.0 Marshmallow firmware, it may seem that there are no special changes, but this is not so. They exist and are worth paying attention to.

Energy saving. In the first update based on Android 6.0, everything related to Stamina and Ultra Stamina disappeared. Instead, there is a standard energy saving mode. After Sony's Stamina, Google's solution looks too simple, it's good that Stamina will appear again in the next updates.

data usage. This built-in application has been redesigned, I must say, for the better. The design has become more clear and logical.

Themes. This application has been completely redesigned. Now there awaits us a pleasantly animated dozing cat with a dirty tail. The developers never tire of reminding that there are many themes available for Xperia devices.

Settings - Memory. There is also a new, sleek design. They simplified it, but did it wisely.

First start. Completely new greeting and initial settings.

Telephone. A whole bunch of small but noticeable changes in the design of the dialer application.

Messages. Similar to the dialer, many changes have been made to the design of Messages. The most significant are stickers for MMS and a convenient file sharing panel.

Calendar. New Xperia branded calendar. Neatly decorated, nothing to complain about.

Camera. The proprietary camera application has not undergone any special changes in terms of design, but has received new functionality in the form of a swipe to switch camera modes (Super Auto, Manual, Video, etc.). By the way, the build number has changed from version 2.0.0 to 1.0.С.1.2. It is difficult to say yet whether there are any changes in the speed of the camera and its shooting quality. Allow application. A new Android Marshmallow feature that allows you to more clearly control the actions of any applications installed on your phone.

Operating speed / Operating time

To be honest, I didn’t really believe that after updating to Android 6.0 Marshmallow, anything would noticeably change in terms of performance. But fortunately I was wrong. 🙂

I don't know about the Xperia Z5 or Xperia Z5 Premium, but the Xperia Z5 Compact is noticeably more responsive than it was previously on Android 5.1 Lollipop. This also applies to various animations on the desktop, curtain, and system applications.

All built-in applications began to open more quickly. The difference is not too significant, but it is felt after the transition from the latest firmware to Android 5.1, this cannot be denied.

We increased the speed of the fingerprint sensor, and most importantly, we did not forget about its accuracy. According to my observations, there are approximately two times fewer false clicks.

It’s hard to say whether the operating time of the Xperia Z5 Compact has changed on Android 6.0 Marshmallow. It seems that the smartphone works the same time as on Android 5.1, but there was Stamina (for me it turned on at 50% charge), but here it is not.

Perhaps with the introduction of Stamina in the next update the situation will become clearer. Now it’s definitely worth noting that on Android 6.0 the operating time has increased, if at all, but only slightly. However, battery consumption when working with applications has become smoother, so to speak.

The remainder / Summing up

Without a doubt, the transition to Android 6.0 Marshmallow is a very important event. The update brought not only new user capabilities, but also greatly changed what is “under the hood”.

After all, it was in Marshmallow that Google completely abandoned Java in favor of the new Android Runtime (ART) application runtime environment. Don’t forget about the careful work to increase the operating time (Doze is just the tip of the iceberg), as well as the total work on system security. Google has been seriously concerned about improving the level of security.

It’s no wonder that Sony Mobile developers were so delayed in releasing Android Marshmallow for the Xperia Z5 series, failing to provide a system update in January 2016.

Samsung also stumbled over this major update, which had just started sending out the Marshmallow update to its last year’s flagships.

The Android 6.0 Marshmallow ROM roll out has just begun and we already have our hands on the next Android update. The Android 6.0.1 version for the Marshmallow firmware has been showing up on several portals and here we are with the installation guide of this firmware.

Curiously, the build version is dated December 1, 2015 which means that it could be a leaked firmware update that’s supposed to be released next month. Though we cannot verify what comes with the update as for now, as apparent from the picture given below, it is an Android Security Update.

Even though the update comes to Android One devices, this doesn’t mean it will show up on the Nexus series as well. Many claim that the update is a fix to the bugs and unresponsive firmware that comes with the Android 6.0 Marshmallow firmware that Android One received recently.

Moreover, only a few devices have received the update and the firmware has been converted into a flashable zip file. The zip contains system and boot partitions only. These are sufficient for the upgrade. If you go through the fastboot process then flash the partitions simultaneously.

So if you are getting curious about the ROM and want to test it for it’s validity, then you can flash it right away with TWRP or fastboot. Also let us know about this update.

Before you proceed to install the ROM, make sure you backup everything as we cannot confirm the stability of the firmware. Flash it using a TWRP or similar custom recovery and enjoy the firmware.

Requirements

• The listed custom ROM is compatible with Android One devices only.
• Make sure you have TWRP recovery installed on your device. Get the recommended TWRP from or the latest official builds from here.
• You must have device drivers installed on your PC so as to transfer the ROM and Google apps to your device’s storage.
• You must fully charge your device or at least to 60%, as the process may take a while.

Backup your Apps and Data
Before you proceed, make sure you backup all your data. This process will wipe all the data from your device except for the internal storage. Hence, a full backup or nandroid backup is recommended. Also backup all your internal storage files just in case anything goes wrong. Take a nandroid backup from the custom recovery before flashing the ROM.

The following process will install the flashable zip firmware file through a custom recovery. However, if it fails for you, then flash system.img and boot.img using fastboot commands.

How to Get Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow For Android One Devices

1. Download the MarshmallowROM from the download section. Also download the Marshmallow Google Apps of your choice.
2. Now transfer the zip file into your device’s internal storage. Place the zip file where you can easily locate it.
3. Now reboot into Custom Recovery(like TWRP). To boot into TWRP, first turn off your device and then press and hold volume down and power keys at the same time. If you see the TWRP logo, that means you have successfully booted into the recovery.
4. It’s highly recommended that you perform a nandroid backup. To backup your ROM, tap on backup option in TWRP and select all the partitions including System, Data, Boot, Recovery, EFS and swipe right where appropriate, to backup.
5. After performing the ROM backup, perform a full wipe. Return to the TWRP main menu and tap the wipe button and select Advanced Wipe. Then select Dalvik Cache, System, Data, and Cache. Now swipe the confirmation button to wipe.
6. Now go back to the TWRP main menu or home screen and tap on the install option. Navigate to the ROM file and select it.
7. Swipe the confirmation button to proceed with the installation. The ROM will be installed.
8. Once installed, reboot to system.

If you see the new boot logo, that means you have successfully installed the ROM on your device. If you come across any boot loop or face system errors, try a factory reset from the recovery or you can always restore your previous ROM from the backup.
