On July 25, Apple announced the launch of a trade-in program in Russia - exchanging old iPhones for new ones with an additional payment. The first stores to join the project were Svyaznoy, re: Store, and M.Video is preparing. We tried to use the program on the first day, July 27, and found out that its conditions are so strict that it is more profitable to sell the phone on Avito.

The official Trade-in program started in the USA in 2013. Owners of outdated phones were offered to return them and receive a discount on a new phone. The official Apple website sets out specific discounts that a user can receive by returning a specific model. For example, for an iPhone 5 you can get 45 dollars (2,700 rubles), and for an iPhone 6S Plus - 260 dollars (15,600 rubles). There is a note that the price may vary depending on the model, but there is no exact calculation of how much you can get for a phone with a certain memory size. Back in 2013, American portals wrote that users most often use a similar service on Gamestop, Gazelle and Amazon, which have their own trade-in. Nevertheless, the news about Apple trade-in in Russia became one of the most discussed ones last week.

In Yekaterinburg, the trade-in program can be used in seven stores: three points of the re: Store network and four points of Svyaznoy. The re: Store is running a trial period for the promotion from July 22, 2017 to August 13, 2017. Svyaznoy claims that the promotion is unlimited.

The promotion on both networks includes iPhone 4, 4S, 5, 5S, 6/6 Plus, 6S/6S Plus, 7/7 Plus, SE. You can buy smartphones starting with the sixth model at this promotion. You can only exchange one phone for another, it is impossible to return the old model after the transaction, and the cost of the new phone should not be less than the price at which the old phone will be purchased. A new phone cannot be purchased in installments or on credit. You cannot get money for the phone you trade in - only another device.

The requirements for the appearance of a phone trade-in are strict: the device must not have chips, cracks, or deep scratches, it must be fully functional. Svyaznoy admitted a couple of small scratches or abrasions on the body. In addition, the smartphone must be purchased from an official Apple representative in Russia. For example, if you purchased a phone from a licensed store in China or even in the USA, you will not be able to exchange it in Russia.

An external inspection of the phone in the store is carried out by a Svyaznoy employee. For example, he immediately refused to accept our broken iPhone 5 with glass replaced several times. If the phone looks decent, then the SIM card is removed from it and connected to an independent program that automatically scans it, checks the IMEI number and other indicators. Based on this, its cost is calculated - unlike in the USA, here it is always different. The procedure can take up to half an hour, but the program scanned our 32 GB iPhone 6s in a few seconds.

The program valued the phone, which is less than six months old, at 10,492 rubles (it was purchased for 44 thousand rubles). The program states that discounts on new phones under the program can be up to 30%. iPhone 7 Plus 128GB (the latest and most expensive model in the Apple line) costs 62,990 rubles in Svyaznoy. Under our conditions, the discount on it will be 16.6%.

Even the seller at Svyaznoy, whom we contacted, advised us not to use the trade-in program, but to sell the phone on Avito. For example, a broken old iPhone 5, which was abandoned under the program, can be sold on the service for 5-7 thousand rubles, and an iPhone 6s can be sold for a price close to the store price. A year ago, an iPhone 4s with a broken screen could be sold for 8 thousand rubles within half an hour.

Telecomdaily CEO Denis Kuskov believes that the program can increase Apple sales in Russia by up to 10%, as this is “a good way to attract attention to the brand’s products and increase the loyalty of its regular customers,” Vedomosti wrote. But he also noted that the success of the program will depend on the size of the discounts. For now, it is more profitable for users to sell phones from person to person. Svyaznoy apparently understood this and began to give an additional discount of 1000 rubles on the promotion.
