Recently, a huge number of Chinese smartphones have entered the world market. But unfortunately, they don’t always live up to the hopes that were placed on them.

The reason for this may be not only the hardware, but also the firmware. Often, stock firmware hides some of the manufacturer's flaws. This is extremely rare, and if it does happen, the manufacturer removes its mistakes in the next updates. But they cannot boast of this. The manufacturer provides subsequent firmware updates, but most of the bugs are never removed.

In this article we will talk about the phone, which has its own shortcomings with the firmware, and we will analyze the custom firmware for this device, which has practically no bugs.

    About the phone

    – an ultra-budget smartphone with 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal memory, a 5-inch screen and a 4000mAh battery (although actually 3600mAh).

This phone quickly gained its audience of fans. There's nothing special about it except the battery. The battery life is really good, and in general the phone is great for everyday tasks, such as calls, surfing the Internet, using social media. networks and Skype.

    Stock firmware bugs

Since the smartphone is a budget one, we didn’t bother much with the firmware. Let's go through the main jambs.

    • Beauty mode

Beauty is a camera mode that does minor facial retouching. The problem with the X5 Max is this: this mode starts automatically when you start the camera, which slightly blurs the photo. A 5MP camera with interpolation up to 8MP already produces far from the highest quality picture, and the Beauty mode only worsens the quality of the photo.

    • Vibration when connected

This is a familiar function for many - after the interlocutor picks up the phone, a short vibration is heard. If this function bothers you, you can disable it.

Our hero is not like that. Its vibration is quite strong, and sometimes very long. 90% of users of this device did not like this. And the main problem is that this function cannot be disabled even through the engineering menu.

Antivirus Dr. Web finds one virus in the system, which is precisely related to the above-mentioned Beauty mode.

    • System updates

Probably half of the users had problems updating over the air. The update arrived, but was not installed, causing an error.

    • Advertising

In fact, the bugs are not very serious, but they still interfere with the normal operation of the smartphone.

Fortunately for us, there are craftsmen who have created a considerable number of custom firmware that save the situation.

What custom firmware are there for Doogee X5 Max?

If we look at the 4PDA website, we will see a huge list of custom firmware.

It is worth considering that there are many firmwares, but not every one will suit you. But we will now tell you which firmware is the best.

Which firmware from the list should I install?

The best firmware from the entire list will be Clean Mod. This is a modified stock firmware. That is, it was not ported from another device, but the stock firmware was simply slightly changed. The advantages include:

    • Viruses removed
    • Removed Beauty mode
    • Built-in root
    • Vibration disabled when connecting
    • Completely free of advertising

Of the minuses, only one point can be noted:

    • , and programs for recording video from the screen and that were in the curtain were removed.

Well, as an addition, the style of the settings was changed (the background was changed from black to white) and the Xperia keyboard was built-in.

The fingerprint scanner works perfectly; when performing everyday tasks, no freezes, crashes, etc. were noticed.

From the list you can choose other more or less good firmware, but they contain bugs. For example, it may not work. Therefore, Clean Mod is the most stable firmware.

Methods for installing Clean Mod firmware

There are two ways: through recovery and through the Flash Tool.

    • Via Flash Tool

Download the Flash Tool program and firmware for installation through this program. Next, download and install the drivers.

Detailed instructions for the firmware can be found in the Doogee X5 Max topic header on the 4PDA website.

This firmware is installed via TWRP recovery (there is no firmware for CWM), which should be installed via the Flash Tool. And of course you need to download the firmware for TWRP.

What to do if the firmware/recovery is not installed

    • If the firmware does not install, try reinstalling the drivers, and preferably use Windows 7.
    • If the firmware cannot be installed through recovery, check whether you have downloaded the correct firmware. Perhaps it is intended to be installed via a computer.
    • If after installing the recovery, you cannot enter it, try installing another recovery from the topic header on w3bsit3-dns.com. Perhaps it is not intended for your hardware revision.

    Conclusion

It’s very disappointing when the manufacturer slips us a pig into the firmware, after which we have to get out on our own. But fortunately, there are smart people who can make good custom firmware so that we can use our smartphone for our own pleasure.

Using the Doogee X5 Max as an example, we found out exactly what problems we saw in the stock firmware, and that with the help of Clean Mod you can fix all these problems.

Clean Mod is a really good firmware with absolutely no bugs. It works stably, without crashes or anything else. And it’s much easier for the user to get used to it, since it’s a fixed stock.

More articles on the topic Firmware.

I write mainly for myself, so as not to have to figure it out again later.
Immediately ACHTUNG - X5, X5 PRO, X5 MAX and X5 MAX PRO - THESE ARE FOUR DIFFERENT PHONES, WITH INCOMPATIBLE FIRMWARE.

Androids are becoming more and more complicated, the Chinese are becoming more cunning.
Starting with Android 6.0, getting root has become a certain problem (incompatible with over-the-air updates, fraught with bricks), and the Chinese, for their part, began to push the virus directly into the kernel.
At the same time, the water update works once or twice, then the Chinese release new firmware, and the old ones stop updating (although the hardware is the same).

I struggled with the subject for a year and a half, and some time after the purchase I began to be bothered by pop-up advertising and randomly installed applications, fortunately quite harmless.
For a year, we managed to alleviate the symptoms by installing “Firewall without Root” and crushing the rest with a combination of Shizuku Manager + App Ops - Permission manager - prohibiting a bunch of system applications from going online and dumping messages to the user.

I didn’t dare change the firmware before the business trip, but I figured it out in detail.
Today I sat down and, without haste, stitched everything together.

    General sequence:
    0. Take a screenshot in the IMEI and MAC settings and transfer it to the computer along with all user files.
    1. Expand SP_Flash_Tool (I got v5.1744)
    2. Expand the archive with the firmware for SP_Flash_Tool (we used DOOGEE-X5max_PRO_20170912.zip and DOOGEE-X5max_PRO_20170912_ZOMBIE_for_SN-20170506.zip from 4pda.ru, preloader_n370b.bin and lk.bin are different, I downloaded the first one without the preloader, which is there broken, without cashe and userdata)
    3. We introduce the phone to the computer, plugging it in when it’s turned off and installing the firewood (the slander says that I took mtk_usb_driver_v5.1453.03.zip from https://androidfilebox.com/tool/mediatek-usb-driver/, but I don’t remember the details).
    4. Make a backup nvram (IMEI/MAC), for which we go to the Readback, Add tab, start 0x380000, size 0x500000 (this is specifically for my model), file name MILKER_NVRAM.IMG
Hereinafter, the scheme of work is as follows - prepare the SP_Flash_Tool, press the Down/UpLoad button, and only then connect the TURNED OFF phone to the computer.
    5. By picking regions from the firmware and entering Readback, we make a backup lk.bin, logo.bin, preloader_n370b.bin, trustzone1.bin, trustzone2.bin, boot.img, recovery.img, secro.img, system.img
You have to be careful with lk.bin - they write that the display often stops working because of it, so in addition to the backup one and two firmware ones, I stocked up on a couple more options from the forums (which is surprising - they are all completely different). However, the one in the standard firmware worked quite well.
    6. We cross ourselves and upload the standard firmware (selecting its scatter MT6737M_Android_scatter.txt), unchecking preloader, cashe and userdata - this takes a few minutes.
    7. Copy the scatter to MT6737M_Android_scatter-MILKEr.txt, modify:
    ===
    ...
    partition_name: nvram
    file_name: Nvram.img
    is_download: true

    type: NORMAL_ROM
    ...
    ===
    (NVRAM recovery)
    Copy MILKER_NVRAM.IMG to Nvram.img
    8. WITHOUT TURNING ON the phone - go to the scatter MT6737M_Android_scatter-MILKEr.txt and uncheck all the boxes except Nvram, sew (restore) nvram.
    9. Turn on the phone, wait a few more minutes for the “application optimization” to take place.
All applications and settings are in place, the firmware is new.

Happiness was incomplete - DrWeb lite swore at
    /system/app/com.gangyun.beautysnap/com.g angyun.beautysnap.apk
    /system/app/com.gangyun.beautysnap/oat/a rm/com.gangyun.beautysnap.odex
As far as I understand, these are installation files for beautysnap (a camera enhancer application). It seems to be inactive in the latest firmware, but I took the following steps -

    10. enable “usb debugging” in the menu
    11. connect the ON phone, start
    adb.exe devices
The path to ADB is yours. I had it as part of Eclipce - at one time I dabbled in programs for Android.
If everything is fine, we see our phone in the list, if this is its first acquaintance with the computer, the phone will ask you to confirm your desire to debug.
    12. Launch
    G:\WIN.APP\Eclipse-64bit\_Android_SDK\pl atform-tools\ adb.exe shell pm list packages > pack.txt
In the pack.txt file we see a list of installed applications:
    ...
    package:com.vanzo.dreams.video
    package: com.gangyun.beautysnap
    package:com.socialnmobile.dictapps.notep ad.color.note
    13. If necessary, remove the villain:
    G:\WIN.APP\Eclipse-64bit\_Android_SDK\pl atform-tools\ adb.exe shell pm uninstall -k --user 0 com.gangyun.beautysnap

If you have an Android smartphone, then you were probably interested in the topic of changing the firmware of such devices. In the simplest case, this topic could come to your attention if the gadget manufacturer updates the system quite regularly and invites you to press a magic button to make your smartphone work faster/more reliable/cheaper. As a rule, updating the firmware does improve the performance of the device, but in very rare cases something goes wrong (in the minds of the developers), and for some reason the fancy new version does not make you enthusiastic. This is where the average user discovers that getting rid of firmware innovations is not so easy... this is what we will talk about.

Further versions of official firmware could be installed in the traditional way. However, in the next version, additional additions were discovered in the form of standard Google applications (such as Chrome, etc.), which were not at all included in my plans. I had to again take FlashTool out of my wide trousers and roll back to the previous compact version, which turned out to be exactly the problematic one, which did not want to be installed “in an amicable way.”

After that, the topic of updating the firmware disappeared from my horizon for a long time - the smartphone worked clearly and reliably. The only drawback that bothered my aesthetic sense of beauty was the stepwise battery discharge graph:

    It’s a small thing, but it’s unpleasant...

We could put an end to this, but to complete the picture, let’s consider another typical case of firmware update. Its background is banal - my smartphone has run out of free space to install applications. On Android devices with a small amount of internal memory, this happens quite often - it’s enough to install something bulky (in my case it turned out to be an offline card), and soon attempts to update some tiny utility will be accompanied by errors asking you to free up more space. Below is an example of the “Not enough space” message when I wanted to update Blynk:

In this situation, the simplest solution for smartphones running Android 6.0 (where the security nuts for working with external memory cards are tightened) would be to install a microSD card with an expansion of the phone’s internal memory onto it. This solution has the only drawback - the memory card is encrypted, and it cannot be used outside the smartphone without dancing with tambourines. Moreover, removing the card will lead to partial or even complete inoperability of the smartphone (judging by the reviews of sufferers on the Internet, since I was not able to check it myself).

I decided to take a different route (after some hesitation) - getting root and transferring applications to a memory card. And in this case, the instructions from the 4pda.ru forum came to my aid (I used it with a minor modification - I removed the checkbox in FlashTool at the userdata item, because I was too lazy to configure everything again). I came across the so-called cleaned stock from 03/30/17, which perfectly installed on my official version from 11/23/2016.

After that, root access allowed me to throw out unnecessary applications from startup (using SD Maid) and using App2SD to repartition the memory card and transfer all bulky applications to it.

    Instead of a conclusion

In this note, I only considered the three most common reasons that require manual firmware updates, but in real life, of course, there are more of them. Although the topic seems unnecessarily complex in technical terms, in fact, the presence of instructions (of varying degrees of detail) allows you to sew left and right even without special training. Of course, there are also chances to get a “brick”, but who doesn’t take risks...

As for the Doogee X5 Max smartphone itself, I recommend it for purchase with the following reservations:

    • its appearance is devoid of grace - a kind of angular device;
    • no OTG (sometimes I miss this feature - I would like to sometimes control my 3D printer);
    • no 4G;
    • not very sensitive GPS receiver (perhaps a defect of my device - near the window indoors it lazily picks up satellites compared to other devices)
